There’s a major conflict brewing between the Catholic Church and authorities in Vietnam. Catholics have been working to defend their human rights (religious liberty) as well as to get the government to return confiscated land, leading not only to arrests, but various forms of persecution against Catholics in Vietnam. The former Vatican embassy, for example, has been bulldozed and is being replaced with a “public part and library.” Archbishop Ngo Quang Kiet is exceptionally disliked by the authorities: lately, he has started an “illegal” prayer vigil. He is being told he is breaking the law, and will be dealt with if he doesn’t stop.
