I first encountered Bach’s Mass in B Minor some twenty or so years ago as a twenty year old, in the form of a Joshua Rifkin CD recording that used authentic instruments and tried to recreate period practice. I was at the time going through a reversion, and I can still remember how profoundly the music moved me, even through my first few listenings and as a young man much more acclimated to alternative rock than any form of classical music. Through the years, the work has grown on more me with every listening, as I imagine all great works of art do.
