Thomas Pots and Peter Kettles

Everybody’s favorite right-wing Catholic attack dog is continuing his dogged pursuit of fake Catholic groups, or as he puts it, “Catholyc astroturf groups”. I would like to draw your attention not to the target of his ire, but the argument he makes. He refer to a statement by bishop Broglio as follows:

“In his Monday statement, Archbishop Broglio explained that according to canon law a group may call itself Catholic if it has been approved by a bishop or recognized by the Holy See in some manner. “It is doubtful that the group in question has such approval. Therefore, it cannot be legitimately recognized as Catholic,” he commented.

Nothing wrong with this statement at all. But it is highly ironic to see it lauded by a person behind an outfit called “Catholic Vote” which endorses candidates like Sharon Angle because it sees an opposition to covering maternity and autism in health care plans as evidence of a  “pro-life and pro-family” stance. This is the same Peters who opposes social safety nets and openly mocks concern with climate change, and who arrogantly asserts his entitlement to believe whatever he wants to believe about healthcare reform. “Catholic” vote, indeed. Given the tenor of his positions, perhaps “Calvinist” vote is more apposite.
