One of my 2008 predictions gets proven wrong today. Bishop David Ricken of the diocese of Cheyenne, WY, has been named bishop of Green Bay. He moves into a diocese that is 6 times larger than his present one and that was in the process of parish consolidations prior to Bishop Zubik being moved to Pittsburgh. A short bio via the Green Bay Press Gazette of Bishop Ricken:
Ricken was born and raised in Dodge City, Kan. He graduated from Conception Seminary College in Conception, Mo., in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He did his theological studies at St. Meinrad School of Theology in Indiana and the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium.
Ricken was ordained a priest on Sept. 12, 1980, at La Junta Catholic Parish in southeast Colorado, in the Diocese of Pueblo, Colo.
He started as associate pastor to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Pueblo. In 1985, he was named the administrator of Holy Rosary Parish in Pueblo and vice chancellor of the diocese. He studied in Rome from 1987 to 1989, then was appointed vocation director and vicar for ministry formation for the Pueblo diocese. In 1992, he also was named diocesan chancellor. From 1996 to 1999, he served as an official of the Congregation for the Clergy at the Vatican. Ricken joined the Cheyenne diocese in 2000 and was named its bishop the next year.
