The supposed coup de grace of Republican anti-abortion supporters is that one wouldn’t vote for someone who supported slavery. Really? While I didn’t care for it at the time, my history teacher had a pretty strong opinion about what people would claim they would do. To make his point, he pointed to student after student in the class and made the claim that one after the other would have made a good Nazi. He did this not because he thought there was anything redeeming about Nazi ideology but because he thought it was cheap rhetoric.
If anyone wants to be taken seriously claiming this bullet proof analogy, then simply write and claim how the support of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Andrew Jackson were inconceivable. Even Ulysses Grant (yes, that Grant) owned five slaves. In fact among the first 18 Presidents of this country, only Adams, pere and Quincy, Fillmore, Pierce, and Lincoln didn’t own slaves. (More info) This is just considering the highest office in the land. None of this makes slavery “right”, no more than voting for Obama makes abortion “right”. Hopefully it does cause people to make their historical analogies be actually historical.
