Eighty-two years ago today, the Spanish Civil War ended.  On April 1, 1939, Generalissimo  Francisco Franco declared victory over the forces of the so-called “Republic” who were in fact the tools of godless communism.    Here is a short clip from a speech he gave that day: With this victory, Franco saved Spain and saved Holy Mother Church from communism and anarchy.  More importantly, his victory was the first setback suffered by international Bolshevism, and was a prophetic herald of... Read more

I recently stumbled across Youtube videographer gothatfunk’s video “Questions for Opponents of Abortion.”  I found it refreshing.  Obviously I disagree with his pro-choice stance, but I can appreciate that he actually wanted to talk about the issue.  He was not interested in demonizing me or calling me names.  He wanted to know what I, as someone who is against abortion, think about several serious questions that would be issues of public policy should abortion be criminalized.  He also wanted to... Read more

Glenn Greenwald, concerning president Obama’s speech about Libya, and more generally about the idea of American Exceptionalism, yesterday; The fact remains that declaring yourself special, superior and/or exceptional — and believing that to be true, and, especially, acting on that belief — has serious consequences. It can (and usually does) mean that the same standards of judgment aren’t applied to your acts as are applied to everyone else’s (when you do X, it’s justified, but when they do, it isn’t).... Read more

A colleague brought to my attention a compilation of anti-Japanese comments from FaceBook posted at the blog Pharyngula.   (Ignore the source:  I am well aware that P.Z. Meyers is an anti-religious bigot, but that is irrelevant to the question at hand.)  The vituperative tone of all of these comments betrays a meanness of spirit that is very sad.   It goes beyond schadenfreude to reveal a profound hatefulness.  As my son just put it, this is sick vengefulness. Lest we need any more evidence that Republicans and allies were merely using the unborn as a weapon against health care reform, have a look at this interview with Bart Stupak, the man who courageously took a consistent pro-life position, and instead was attacked and vilified by the so-called defenders of life. It got so nasty, he left politics. He even received death threats. But we all owe him a debt. Recall that the House had a passed a version... Read more

The Gospel shows that Christ at first intended to announce and found, not a Church separate from the world, but the “kingdom of God”. In the primary idea of the Redemption, this kingdom would have been light and life flowing from God immediately into the world. It would have been wholly interior, and in it the whole law would have been fulfilled. Humanly, but not incorrectly speaking, the structural Church is only a secondary plan of Redemption, which had become... Read more

In a homily for “prelates” or “preachers,” St Anthony of Padua explains what a just man is like: A mountain, being immovable, stands for the stable life of the just man; of whom Isaiah says: A man shall be as when one is hid from the wind, and hideth himself from a storm: as rivers of water in drought, and the shadow of a rock that standeth outh in a desert land. [Is 32.2] This is as if to say:... Read more
