Via Jay Anderson, I came across a relatively new blog today called Fidelis. It has a lot of interesting content, though it appears to line itself up unabashedly on the conservative, Republican side of things. Parenthetically, I was surprised and disappointed to see a link to Michelle Malkin and another to Blogs for Victory. Whatever may be its initial leanings, I intend to visit Fidelis regularly. Here’s part of its underlying outlook: Fidelis (Latin for faithful) is the universal name... Read more

A momentous agreement was reached in Dublin. Over 100 governments agreed on a treaty banning the use of cluster bombs, bombs that break up in the air and scatter hundreds of smaller bombs over a large area. The success owes much to a push from Gordon Brown, who agreed to take the UK’s cluster bombs out of commission. Who did not take part in these talks? Why, a sundry group of renegade countries including China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Israel— and... Read more

I am not going to do a review on this movie for the simple reason that I despised the series and, therefore, will not be wasting my money on the actual movie. As a woman, I am actually offended by the theme of the series, which is continued by the movie itself based on what I have heard on the radio. What bothers me the most about the theme of the series is how women are portrayed, its emphasis on... Read more

I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of this movie. Not because it was any good, mind you. At times the film seemed little more than a collection of every half-baked criticism of corporations ever uttered by man. So much so that the film often seemed to lapse into self-parody, which is what, for me, provided the bulk of the entertainment. (more…) Read more

When the whole Rev. Wright issue took over the news, I was relieved to be Catholic and not to have to witness such display of divisiveness during Mass or even outside of it… Well, that was short-lived–this is truly an embarrassment.  There is definitely a good case for priests to stay out of politics. Read more

Writing in Newsweek, Fareed Zakaria does a fairly decent job of explaining the elements of Senator McCain’s foreign policy vision that I find so disturbing: On March 26, McCain gave a speech on foreign policy in Los Angeles that was billed as his most comprehensive statement on the subject. It contained within it the most radical idea put forward by a major candidate for the presidency in 25 years. Yet almost no one noticed. In his speech McCain proposed that... Read more

From Democracy Now!: In Iraq, residents of Fallujah are claiming US soldiers are handing out Bible-themed coins aimed at converting them to Christianity. According to the McClatchy Newspapers, the coins quote passages from the New Testament. Fallujah was the site of two bloody US assaults in 2004 that killed scores of Iraqis and left tens of thousands displaced. Sunni groups have called on the US military to crack down on soldiers handing out the coins. Read more

There is no doubt that Hans Urs von Balthasar was one of the greatest theologians of the twentieth century. The far-ranging scope of his interests found there way in his numerous books and articles. Even those who disagree with elements (small or large) of his thought can recognize his genius. It is for this reason that many people, supporters and detractors alike, are confused when they look into Balthasar’s relationship with Adrienne von Speyr. According to Balthasar, you can’t understand... Read more
