The Provisional RA was a terrorist organization. Its atrocities are well-documented: deliberately murdering civilians at random, using human bombs, extortion, murder of “informers”, knee-capping, bank robbing, drug dealing… the list goes on. There is no doubt whatsoever that this group engaged in intrinsically evils acts of the most grave kind. (As an aside, the many Irish-Americans who contributed money to Sinn Fein or associated groups were unquestionably engaged in formal cooperation in evil). At the same time, the IRA and its... Read more

When you first have a new baby everyone refers to you as a “new mom.” 2 1/2 years down the road the title fades, yet in reality I still am a new mom. Just as my daughter discovers the world a little at a time, so do I discover parenting one step at a time. Big Girl shows me how much I don’t know. Potty training. Most of us have zero memories of our time learning how to join the... Read more

In the Democratic Primary, it is truly a tale of two parties.  Our first stop in Ohio shows Obama losing the 65+ vote 72-26%.  This demo makes up 14% of Ohio’s democratic primary voters.  When we break up the vote tally by race and age, only whites under 30 broke for Obama, and that was just a 1% break in an exit poll; they make up 10% of Democratic primary voters.  Among the 3 older white demographic, Clinton won them... Read more

Every so often, some “researcher” thinks they have figured religion out. People don’t hear voices from God unless they are insane or they are on drugs. Since this kind of argument is used so many times, some who hear it believe it must be true. Epistemologically, it is invalid; researchers base their results on themselves and their own experiences. They are making a universal rule out of their own particular circumstance. It would be like saying blonds do not exist; those who seem to be blond use hair dye. My proof? I... Read more

This summer seminar, “The Moral Foundations of Law”, sponsored by the Witherspoon Institute, might be of interest to Vox Nova readers who are law students: The Witherspoon Institute is pleased to announce the first annual summer seminar on the Moral Foundations of Law, a comprehensive week-long program investigating the interaction among moral thought, legal theory, and the nature of moral legislation. Led by Gerard V. Bradley of Notre Dame Law School, in collaboration with Robert P. George of Princeton University... Read more

I’m a bit late getting to this, but National Catholic Reporter’s Joe Feuerherd penned a screed in the Washington Post last week in which he claimed that he voted for Obama, and “by doing so, according to the leaders of my church, I put my soul at risk.” The problem is, Feuerherd completely misinterprets the document in question. If it was never licit to vote for a candidate who supported an intrinsically evil position– well, every Catholic in the United States... Read more

For starters, I (of course) meant “Martin”, not “Charlie.”  (And yes, to all those who pointed out the error, I agree that “Apocalypose Now” is infinitely superior to “Hot Shots!  Part Deux”.) Next, I did not intend to (and so, did not) — as one commenter put it — “decry” the recognition of Sheen, whom I admire.  What I “sigh[ed]” about was the fact — and it is a fact — that someone who comes so close to being an... Read more
