The obedience, affection and common mission binding the Society of Jesus to the pope are solid, unchanging and the reason why differences can be so painful, said the new superior general of the Jesuits. Father Adolfo Nicolas, elected Jan. 19 to head the world’s largest Catholic men’s order, told reporters, “The Society of Jesus has always been, from the beginning, and always will be in communion with the Holy Father, and we are happy to be so.” Meeting journalists Jan.... In regards to my post below on how the GOP has successfully duped Catholics to vote Pro-Life: There is a tendency, as evidenced by comments in that thread, to reduce political action to a choice between parties. They write: (more…) Read more

What happens when a monster comes out of nowhere and interferes in the life of yuppies in New York City? They act stupid and die. That is the lesson one learns from the movie Cloverfield. (more…) Read more
“A living heritage picnics on the graves of its ancestors. That is no trespass, but is instead an act of loving continuity with the past. And the successful inhabitation of a place requires transmitting the intimacy of that fidelity, not in ‘still life’ to strangers, but across generations within the ties that bind. Those ties that bind – buttressed by a natural effect for survival under conditions of hardship and scarcity – form the only existential context within which the... Read more
