Something is brewing in Italy. I do not have a good feeling about this. Many politicians have been pushing for a confidence vote  on Romano Prodi, the Prime Minister of Italy. Prodi has given in and that vote will soon take place. This comes in the wake of Clemente Mastella’s resignation as the Justice Minister caused by scandalous charges  leveled against him and his wife. But Mastella promised that his party (Christian Democrat Party) would continue to back Prodi. Then something happened — and he reversed his decision; he is no longer supporting Prodi’s... Read more

Here is an op-ed, in the Los Angeles Times, called “Abortion’s Battle of Messages”, by Frances Kissling (formerly with “Catholics for a Free Choice”) and Kate Michelmen (formerly with NARAL-Pro-Choice America).  Now, I believe that Roe was wrong and also that abortions which involve the intentional killing of a fetus are immoral.  I participate regularly in anniversary “Marches for Life” and so on.  So, I understand that my reactions to the op-ed might be seen, by some, as tainted, or of little interest, and will simply report my... Read more

I wrote the following several years ago.  I was a cabbie in Milwaukee for a little under a year as I worked my way back into the IT industry. During that time I had many interesting experiences. Some were great, awful, scary, and fascinating. Here is one such experience. It was a typical spring day. About 11, a fare pops up on my monotone 5-line receiver. I’m logged into zone 10, which includes everything to the north and east of the... Read more

Via Mark Shea, here is an interesting piece from Inside Catholic advocating an end to child labor laws in the United States. Now I expect that to many the very notion that we should abolish laws restricting child labor will seem shocking and scandalous. The very term conjures up images of eight year olds in sweatshops, working long hours in poor conditions, to the detriment of their education and possibly even their health. It is something no parent could wish... Read more

Apparently, Erick of RedState thinks not subscribing to the Laffer School of Economics makes one an “economic retard.” Stick to the social issues, Mike, and hire a supply-sider to explain your economic policies. BTW:  [Upon further review and upon seeing that this has been addressed, I’m removing it.] Read more

Thirty-five years ago today, the Supreme Court of the United States held in Roe v. Wade that a woman has a constitutional right to kill her unborn child.  There is much I could say about Roe, which I believe is, hands down, the worst judicial decision in the history of our constitutional republic. But for today, I will hold my tongue. Instead, I would like to acknowledge the tireless efforts of the foot soliders in the pro-life movement; many of... Read more

For fans of political history, few things annoy more than the misuse of terms. Americans are particularly bad about this, but I think for understandable reasons – our revolution (an un-conservative term) was “conservative” in that our strange mixture of Greco-Roman civic republicanism, therapeutic deism, and Enlightenment thinking came to be successfully at peace with market liberalism. And alongside traditionalism and religiosity, sympathy for this economic viewpoint is a workable model for what it means to be of the right,... Read more
