The dominant issue for 2008 will be the economy.  Parts of the country are presently in recession.  Whether the country as a whole joins in a recession is another question. Decoupling theory proves false as Europe and Asia follow the U.S. in a downturn. Gas peaks at $3.50 gal in WI.  This would place oil prices 41 cents higher than they are presently.  This peak is not retraced for several years as world wide demand wanes due to recession. The USCCB is... Read more

Huckabee’s attack ad on Romney said something very interesting: “No executions. Supported gun control. And Romney’s government-mandate health plan provided a $50 co-pay for abortion.” This really shows the need for a consistent ethic of life, and the clear limits of a political marriage with the evangelical movement. Huckabee is supporting the culture of life on abortion, but (in the same breath) opposing it with the death penalty and gun control. And even for somebody who supports the death penalty, isn’t... Read more

The New Year brings many changes, and my company offered me one too.  We learned that we are having a 45% increase in the employee portion of the family health plan premium.  If an employee were to make $48,000, the new premium would take up 13% of their salary.  Having watched Sicko twice in the prior 48 hours, my next move may be to a province, not a state. Read more

After numerous years of decline, the murder rate in DC jumped by 7 percent in 2007. In total, 181 people lost their lives, and 77 percent of these victims were killed by guns. Guns. Any solution to this underlying problem of pervasive violence is undoubtedly complex, and must stand at the intersection of economic deprivation, a school system that does not care, the breakdown in family structures, a depraved popular culture, and lingering racism. But still, it always comes back to guns.... Read more

“This duty is not limited to one’s own family, nation or State, but extends progressively to all mankind, since no one can consider himself extraneous or indifferent to the lot of another member of the human family. No one can say that he is not responsible for the well-being of his brother or sister (cf. Gen 4:9; Lk 10:29-37; Mt 25:31-46). Attentive and pressing concern for one’s neighbour in a moment of need — made easier today because of the... Read more

I stumbled upon the tiny and innocuous group Catholics for Amnesty via their website this morning. This ragtag outfit encourages any and all people to donate money to Amnesty International under the motto “Catholics for amnesty,” regardless if one is Catholic. Why? Because Pope Benedict XVI and Renato Cardinal Martino have urged Catholics to withdraw their support for the organization, which now promotes abortion as a “right.” Under typical circumstances, I would have simply surfed on (if you’re in the... Read more

The Gospel reading for today’s Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph has provided the backdrop for recent papal teachings on the Church’s view of immigration. Doing what was necessary for the good of Mary and the baby Jesus, Joseph led his family out of Israel and into the land of Egypt as a migrant refugee. The Church reminds us that Jesus is identified in special way in the face of the immigrant and that all Catholics... Read more
