In the October 8 issue of Newsweek, which has Mitt Romney on the cover, the “Editor’s Desk” column contains this: All theologies (especially orthodox theologies) can seem oddball when you look at them closely . . .. I have to admit, my intuition is precisely the opposite. It’s the do-it-yourself, Shelia-istic, pop-star syncretism, eclectic New-Age-y stuff that seems “oddball” to me. “Orthodox” theologies — when you look at them “closely — don’t seem “oddball” at all. What was it Chesterton... Read more

From reading some of the more popular Catholic blogs, one would think that the two most important issues in the life of the Church today were the restoration of the tridentine Mass and denying communion to politicians who support abortion. I want to address the second issue in some detail. During the last election, many on the right hounded the Church to chase John Kerry from the altar rails, and a small but vocal minority of bishops said they would... Read more

In overtime cases, Depression-era laws aimed at factories and textile mills are being applied in a 21st century economy, raising fundamental questions about the rules of the modern workplace. As the country has shifted from manufacturing to services, for example, which employees deserve the protections these laws offer? Generally, workers with jobs that require independent judgment have not been entitled to overtime pay. But with businesses embracing efficiency and quality-control initiatives, more and more tasks, even in offices, are becoming... Read more

Hat tip to friend of Vox Nova AdamV who brought to my attention Ann Coulter’s most recent outrageous statement: that women should not be allowed to vote: If we took away women’s right to vote, we’d never have to worry about another Democrat president. It’s kind of a pipe dream, it’s a personal fantasy of mine, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly,... Read more

According to President Carter, there is no genocide taking place in Darfur. Unbelievable. Simply unbelievable. There’s a great deal I would like to say, but blogging in anger is never a good idea, so I will refrain from commenting further for the time being. Suffice it to say, President Carter is quite mistaken. The evidence that a genocide is taking place in Darfur is beyond dispute. Please continue to pray for those suffering so greatly in Darfur. And may God have mercy... Read more

I am a fan of good science fiction and fantasy films. Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Blade Runner, and Star Trek all make their way into my film collection. Doctor Who, as I have pointed out before, is my favorite television series. Thus, when a new fantasy film comes out where Christopher Eccleston plays the villain, I knew I had to go and see it. Katerina and I were pleasantly surprised to find out that a little video we had made last year for a Confirmation retreat was played on EWTN last night.  The video, Why am I Catholic?, was shown in its entirety on Life on the Rock.  It was quite fitting that it aired on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on a show hosted by Franciscan Friars, because of all the saints whose images and icons are in the video, only... Read more

John McG of Man Bites Dog has a list of things that are sometimes debated out of a misguided belief of necessity.  His point is that it is better to concede these things that are probably true anyway and just state the real objection.  (more…) Read more
