New York Times: U.S. is Top Arms Seller to Developing World The United States maintained its role as the leading supplier of weapons to the developing world in 2006, followed by Russia and Britain, according to a Congressional study to be released Monday. Pakistan, India and Saudi Arabia were the top buyers. The global arms market is highly competitive, with manufacturing nations seeking both to increase profits and to expand political influence through weapons sales to developing nations, which reached... Read more

The annual Red Mass was celebrated yesterday at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington DC. The celebrant was Archbishop Wuerl and the homilist was Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee. In general, it was a beautiful and solemn Mass, with one major exception. At the beginning, there was a military-style procession into the Cathedral. One of the soldiers was barking orders, a harsh cacophony in a cathedral renowned for its quiet solemnity. The soldiers, stomped up toward the altar... Read more

In light of the burgeoning controversy over the Connecticut Catholic Conference’s provisional and contingent approval of the administering of Plan B to victims of sexual assault, John-Henry Westen encourages Catholics to write to both the Pontifical Academy for Life and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the faith in order to express “concern.” Perhaps I am a bit too traditional of a Catholic, but I would suggest that a clarification from the bishops themselves is the first appropriate step since... Read more

The unfortunate reality is that humanity has rejected to be shaped by the suggestions and inducements of God. We have not followed His guiding grace in determining the measure of our needs and how we use the world; how we work in the world or how we preserve the world. The result is that we behave toward the environment, toward nature, rapaciously and catastrophically. When we apply our own sense of mastery and not appropriate use we upset the natural... Read more

In recent days, the folks at Mirror of Justice, America magazine, the Commonweal blog, etc., have been talking about ye olde topic, “the identity of Catholic universities”. Of course, it’s not just those of us who are into the “Catholic university thing” who are hang-wringing about the state of our project; lovers of the university-enterprise generally are uneasy. See, for example, the new book by my law-school teacher and former dean, Anthony Kronman: Education’s End: Why Our Colleges and Universities... Read more

While the last Harry Potter novel has now come and gone, for years to come I expect we will hear more and more about the “evils” of Harry Potter by some of its critics. If nothing else, the continuing movie series will encourage this. They will try to tell you that the Pope has condemned the Potter series. Of course, that is because many sources, and especially LifeSite, have worked to suggest this. Indeed, LifeSite has had a campaign against Harry Potter for years, and... Read more

War is deviltry. It calls for sacrifices indeed, but not at the altar of love. “Greater love hath no man than this.” A great blasphemy this, to use Christ’s words in connection with men going to war. They go because they are drafted, because they are afraid of what their neighbors will say, because the pay is good, because the benefits accruing afterward (the G.I. Bill of Rights) are great. And they are told by the press and the pulpit... Read more

Perusing through the Catholic blogs in search of commentary on the unsettling news that the Connecticut Catholic Conference has conceded to the inevitable distribution of the emergency contraceptive drug, Plan B, to victims of sexual assault, I came across a comprehensive post at American Papist. Please read over his entire post. (more…) Read more
