The funny thing is that the Americans I know who ask me this question only speak…. (ehemm…) one language. But why should they speak another language? They are in America after all where English is the official language, right? So… why does the waiter in a small town in the Dominican Republic have a working knowledge of English? Why does the 15-year old German from Bavaria speak fluent English along with two other languages? Why do they offer English classes... Read more
“…[T]here is a great deal of scientific proof in favor of evolution, which appears as a reality that we must see and that enriches our knowledge of life and of being as such. But the doctrine of evolution does not answer everything and does not answer the great philosophical question: Where does everything come from? And how does everything take a path that ultimately leads to the person?…” Source Read more
In his latest column, John Allen discusses a highly interesting conversation between Pope Benedict and a group of priests on the issue of the environment. Reflecting on his now familiar theme that there can be no separation between faith and reason, Benedict argued that the environmental movement allowed morality to re-enter the domain of rational debate in the modern mind, for, as Allen puts it, “nature itself carries a moral message that can be deciphered utilizing the faculty of conscience,... I previously noted that everyone should try to go and see the documentary, “The Devil Came on Horseback,” which shows the horrors of the genocide taking place in Darfur through the “exclusive photographs and first hand testimony of former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle.” Well, there is now a trailer for the film up at You Tube, which I encourage y’all to watch. Most of all, please continue to pray for those suffering so greatly in Darfur; and if you... Read more
Conscientious objection: it seems in America, this fundamental right is slowly being taken away from us. While it has been routinely used by people opposed to war (and in this case, it has to be someone who is morally opposed to all war; if they have a reason to reject a specific war, like the Iraq War, their right to object is not clear in the United States), this is not the only way it can be – or should... First, I agree with Mr. Minion that the Republican Party is far from perfect. My point in this exchange is not to defend or promote the GOP, but to emphasize that when it comes to supporting the Catholic Church’s core, non-negotiable “Culture of Life” teachings, Republican candidates (especially at the presidential level) are almost always better than their democratic counterparts. And while I agree with Mr. Minion that “Catholics are not at home in either party,” I strongly disagree with... Read more
Here is the crux of the problem: Alexham states: “The Democratic Party has also repeatedly demonstrated a hostility to any and all forms of orthodox Christianity. The notion that both political parties are morally bankrupt, and therefore it is acceptable to vote for a democratic candidate who holds public-policy views in direct contravention of virtually all of the Catholic Church’s core “Culture of Life” teaching is patently absurd.” To claim that the Republican party is any better than its Democratic... Courtesy of Archbishop John J. Myers: What are “proportionate reasons”? To consider that question, we must first repeat the teaching of the church: The direct killing of innocent human beings at any stage of development, including the embryonic and fetal, is homicidal, gravely sinful and always profoundly wrong. Then we must consider the scope of the evil of abortion today in our country. America suffers 1.3 million abortions each year–a tragedy of epic proportions. Moreover, many supporters of abortion propose... Read more
