When you show compassion, don’t toot your horn, like the hypocrites in the synagogues and on the streets, to get praise from people. They have their reward. No, when you show compassion, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Be quietly compassionate. Then your father, noticing that you’ve acted discreetly, will be generous with you.
