Playing God Book Excerpt: The Gift of Institutions

If we want to make creative and conscious choices about the institutions we invest our lives in—and that we allow to invest our lives with meaning and power—we will have to decide whether we believe they produce image bearing or merely idolatry and injustice. But whatever we decide, we will have to choose some institution. We may leave the institution of the church for the institution of Hollywood, or go in the exact opposite direction, but we are very unlikely to flourish, or create opportunities for others to flourish, if we try to avoid institutions altogether.

So if we want our power to be used for the comprehensive flourishing of the world, we will have to understand institutions: how they function, how they fail, and how we can be agents of their health and renewal.
