During his remarks titled "New Thought in American Culture," historian John S. Haller Jr. will trace the story of New Thought back to its early beginnings in the American rejection of Calvinist theology, the transcendentalism of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and the visionary theology of Emanuel Swedenborg, though the mind-cure methods of Phineas Parkhurst Quimby, the Christian Science of Mary Baker Eddy, the teaching of Emma Curtis Hopkins, and into modern times. In the end, he finds that the true influence of New Thought goes beyond individuals and organizations; it represents a belief in the power of thought that has permeated American culture and become a part of our everyday lives.
