Donald William Wuerl was named the Archbishop of Washington, D.C. by Pope Benedict in XVI, a position he held from 2006 to 2018. In 2010, Benedict XVI made Wuerl a Cardinal, but Wuerl resigned from his position as Archbishop in 2018. Wuerl had been widely considered to be a bishop who was proactive when it came to confronting sexual abuse and trying to remove sexually abusive clergy years before many other church leaders would attempt to do so. That said, he was accused of mishandling some sexual abuse cases during his tenure as Bishop of Pittsburgh and resigned from his position. Pope Francis accepted Wuerl's resignation as Archbishop of Washington in October 2018, but Wuerl remains a member of the College of Cardinals and thus one of the 10 American cardinals who would be involved in the election of the next Pope.
