Carl Lentz was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1978. Starting in 1998, he studied at North Carolina State University where he was a walk-on for the men's basketball team. After graduating in 2000, he studied at The King's College and Seminary in Los Angeles before moving to Sydney, Australia to study at Hillsong International Leadership College of Hillsong Church. It was there he thought of planting a Hillsong Church in New York City. He co-founded the church with his wife, Laura, and Joel Houston in 2010.
