Harold Samuel Kushner was born in Brooklyn, New York and educated at Columbia University. He was ordained as a rabbi in 1960 by the Jewish Theological Seminary. He later served as the congregational rabbi of Temple Israel of Natick for 24 years and became part of the Rabbinical Assembly. He wrote several books about theology including the best-selling work "When Bad Things Happen to Good People" following the premature death of his son, Aaron, from progeria in 1977.
