Sandy Eisenberg Sasso was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and was very involved in her Reform congregation as a child. She wanted to enter the rabbinate when she was 16, but the role had never been open to women. She joined the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 1969 regardless. While there, she married her classmate, Dennis Sasso, which made them the first rabbinical couple in Jewish history. She served as the rabbi of the Manhattan Reconstructionist Congregation and at Beth-El Zedeck in Indianapolis. She has written a number of children's books on religious topics as well as non-fiction, religious books for adults.
