Simone Campbell was born in Santa Monica, California and originally had the first name "Mary" in honor of her paternal grandmother. She was the oldest child in the family. She joined the Sisters of Social Service in 1964 and took her final vows almost a decade later. A few years after taking her vows, she graduated from law school. A year after getting her degree, she founded the Community Law Center in Oakland, California where she served for 18 years as its lead attorney.
