Indonesia’s Muslim Leaders Mourn Francis, Celebrating Interfaith Harmony

There have been thousands of articles written about the Easter Monday passing of Pope Francis.

News writers and obituary writers had been anticipating this event. Writers from all over gave the world a retelling of this religious leader who courted controversy with his embrace of individuals from other faiths and his stances on traditional Catholic doctrine regarding same-sex relationships and the role of women in the church.

While most news organizations were respectful, there was still plenty of discussion of the direction Francis took the Catholic Church and whether that direction should change with the next pope.

Most online publishers, including this one, took the opportunity to inform readers how the next pope will be chosen, the history of past popes and even why the Vatican uses smoke to announce the next pope.

For our Media Web Tracker purposes we are choosing to highlight the Reuters article "Outpouring of grief over Pope Francis' death in largest Muslim-majority country Indonesia" by Stanley Widianto.

We are choosing this article because of its emphasis on "interfaith harmony," which was a goal of the pope.

It's important to note that there are those who think Francis could have done more to understand Jewish concerns and weren't fans of his condemnation of continued Jewish military operations in Gaza.

However, Francis did declare anti-semitism a sin and "significantly advanced the Catholic Church’s relationship with Jews and Israel by actively promoting dialogue, reconciliation and a strong stance against antisemitism," according to Andrew Silow-Carroll, editor in chief of the New York Jewish Week.

The Reuters article reports on the profound mourning in Indonesia following the death of Pope Francis. Despite being a predominantly Muslim nation, Indonesia's major Islamic organizations and the general public expressed deep respect and sorrow for the Pope's passing.

Leaders from the country's largest Islamic groups, praised Pope Francis for his  commitment to peace, interfaith dialogue, and human fraternity.

Social media platforms in Indonesia saw an outpouring of tributes, with many users sharing heartfelt messages and memories of the Pope's inclusive gestures, such as his use of the Islamic greeting "Assalamualaikum."
