YHWH, or Abraham, Plays Matchmaker: Reflections on Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67

And one more note about this text. At Genesis 24:55, Laban and his mother try to bargain with the servant to keep Rebecca with them for ten days longer. Though again we are not told directly the reason for this attempted delay, given what we now know about Laban, could it be that the sharp-eyed man sees the servant as a possible fount of golden goods, and if Rebecca stays a bit longer, perhaps Laban might convince the servant to part with a few more precious items? Who knows? But the Laban we have seen and the Laban we will soon see would act exactly like that.

So, YHWH is with the servant and in effect picks Rebecca as spouse for the carrier of the patriarchal blessing and promise, Isaac. Yet, in typical Hebrew writing style, the teller of the tale is not content simply to tell a story without including in it the genuine stuff of humanity in all our grit and greed and self-care. YHWH made the match, but the people in the story had their own games to play as the match was made. Are we surprised? Hardly! The Bible gives us always the stuff of real life, not merely the romanticized would-be life. How grateful we preachers must be for such amazing writing from so long ago!
