Note here also the misnaming of the lake as a sea. Mark probably deliberately intends with this "mistake" to recall another calmed sea in the history of Israel, i.e. the Red Sea before Moses, and in doing so Mark imbues Jesus with the same power of deliverance. Today, with Hurricane Katrina and the Indonesian Tsunami still fresh in our memories and with global warming raising our oceans and aggravating our weather patterns, this lesson perhaps has even more relevance. Our planet today faces all sorts of rising storms: how should we respond to calm them? Presumably with faith, but what does that mean? What can the David and Goliath story above tell us about the need for both our best effort and our fullest faith? What might a good and faithful response look like?
