Theologians Wax Introspective

In mapping out three impasses in Christology, an area of theological study that examines the significance of the person and God of Christ throughout Christian history and in the contemporary context and which has generated significant tension between theologians and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Tilley recommended a commitment to constructive communication and witness through a dialogue of action. "Communication is the key practice of disciples who are theologians," he said before invoking St. Francis of Assisi: "Preach the Gospel always. If necessary, use words."

Ultimately, most agreed that hope is the most viable antidote to impasse. Although stated in many different ways throughout the course of the convention, FitzGerald's notion captured it best: "Hope opens up the possible by allowing us to be possessed by the incomprehensible mystery of love that is always coming toward us."
