As a fellow hijabi, I am always excited to see headscarf-wearing athletes competing, giving their best to their game while maintaining their faith. It just proves to me that one can wear anything and compete. Women compete in next to nothing all the time. Why should women who choose to follow their faith in a particular way (or who are following the rules of their country) not be allowed to compete?
At the Beijing games, Al Ghasara said she felt her specially-designed hijood and clothes were the perfect combination of modesty and high performance. "I hope that my wearing the hijood will inspire other women to see that modesty or religious beliefs don't have to be a barrier to participating in competitive sports."
Tell that to FIFA and the Iranian women's soccer team.
