The Hurons, the Iroquois, and the Blackrobes

Do not think that the rage of the Iroquois, and the loss of many Christians and catechumens, can bring to nought the mystery of the cross of Jesus Christ, and the efficacy of His blood. We shall die; we shall be captured, burned, and butchered: be it so.

On June 26, 1930, Pope Pius XI canonized Isaac Jogues, Jean de Brébeuf, Noël Chabanel, Antoine Daniel, Charles Garnier, René Goupil, Jean de Lalande, and Gabriel Lalemant. Known collectively as the North American Martyrs, their lives and works belie the stereotype of missionaries as cultural imperialists. They experienced humiliation, torture, and suffering of the most extreme kind. Theirs is one of the great tales of Christian heroism, which we commemorate and celebrate this week.
