Old and New Witchcraft: A Q and A with Raven Grimassi

Is it safe to use the traditional plants of witchcraft by anyone interested in them?

Unfortunately the answer is no, as these plants can be very deadly when used by someone with inexperience. It is for this reason that in the book I supply a way to work with plant spirits without having the physical plants in place. This is done, in part, through the use of magical symbols.

Why are ancient roots important to witchcraft?

I think for the same reason that DNA is important - preservation of the design, what it reproduces, and how it benefits and sustains the organism containing it. This touches upon a concept I present in the book, which is the idea of the momentum of the past. This is an old teaching that energy flows through time, in what is sometimes called the "living river of blood"—referring to lineage. Through this the ancestral memory flows to us and through us. This is important because we have access to the accumulated wisdom and knowledge of our ancestors. They lived in "common cause" with Nature and we have much to learn and gain from them. Today modern people are collectively much less directly connected to Nature due to our technology. We try and control Nature as opposed to being one with it. The ancient roots of witchcraft bring us back into harmony with the mother of us all.
