Christmas has strayed from being a time to reflect on the birth of Christ and spending time with loved ones into a holiday of stress, consumerism, and mad dashes through the shopping malls to buy things that we don't need and probably don't want. As the Advent Conspiracy website says, "When it comes to spending time with those you love, it's all about quality, not quantity," and we certainly won't be finding that quality in a department store. Gift-giving has consumed us, and somewhere along the way we have forgotten that God's great gift was one of great cost and filling a great need. If we can begin to think that way during this season, then the gifts we give might be more directed toward the great needs around us.
This Christmas, spend more time with your friends and family, make thoughtful gifts, give to those who need it most, and think about what really matters. It'll bring you closer to God, it'll help people, and you'll be happier for it.
