Returning Hijabi: A Passage to Identity

People knew me for twenty-three years of life as a Muslim woman who happened not to wear a scarf. When I started wearing hijab, I did not make a public announcement on my Facebook or change my profile picture. Most people were introduced to this new image of me gradually, in person. Many of my family and friends did not bat an eye when they saw me start wearing hijab, and I found this to be the most reassuring response people who could have toward this change in me. It meant that to those I cared about and who cared for me in return, it did not matter what I did or did not wear on my head. Those who did say something about the scarf were largely very supportive, proverbially patting me on the back for making the step. One of my cousins even commemorated my "hijabiversary," as she calls it, by giving me a gift on the one-year anniversary of starting to wear a hijab. She marked it, appropriately, by giving me a scarf.
