Just out of curiosity … can anyone tell me why the best female candidates the GOP can offer are Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann?

Surely there’s an American Margaret Thatcher, a Corazon Aquino or Indira Gandhi? Where is she?

But then again, maybe there are thousands of them out there. They’re just too smart to jump into the viper pit of current-day GOP politics.

Those Manhattan Storage ads are often mildly amusing. There was another one that referenced the rapture nonsense in the spring.

My personal opinion is that Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann are favorites because they are both good looking, have a strong presence and appear to be easily controlled (natural result of not being particularly bright). Bush was also easily controlled (definitely not a bright person) and had a strong presence (not sure about good looking).

I don’t know enough about the 2 male front runners (Perry and Romney) regarding control-ability, but they are certainly playing ball considering their past history…and have strong presence / good looking.

In general, it looks like more women in congress are democrats (http://womenincongress.house.gov/historical-data/representatives-senators-by-congress.html?congress=111). Perhaps the remaining republican women just don’t have the presence that the 2 current candidates have…

I’d say it’s because the right wing can’t bring itself to support a physically unattractive woman, or a woman who’s too assertive, or a woman who wields power too strongly. Also, she has to be married, and she has to have children.

When you map out that Venn diagram, all you’re left with is the Palins and Bachmanns.

It’s not that vapid wackjobs are the only women the Republican party can find, it’s that these are the kind of women who appeal to Republican voters. Any woman with more brains than Palin or less religion than Bachmann is too threatening for right wingnuts.

Margaret Thatcher? Be careful what you wish for!
