Demanding that atheists study and understand the entire Bible before they can argue against it is kind of like saying you have to molest kids for a few years to really appreciate the shortcomings of NAMBLA.

I totally agree. However, it is entertaining to point out absurdities and immoral acts that plague that book.

Christians largely accept the truth of the Bible and reject the Qur’an without having spent much time actually reading either. Only atheists are required to be theologians to have an opinion. How does one spell hypocrite?

  • Sean Santos

An objection that I think is quite important: virtually no one would claim that studying the Bible, by itself, is actually morally wrong. So it’s somewhat less absurd of a demand (although still an absurd demand; no one demands that we study Greek mythology before disbelieving in Zeus).

There is no more reason to argue against the Bible than there is to argue against Goldfinger or Dr. NO. It is fiction. Remember when Dan Quayle argued against Murphy Brown’s pregnancy confusing reality with TV?

People who make claims about the Bible have the burden of proof. Until that proof is tested, I won’t argue against Paul Bunyan or Pecos Bill or any other legends.

    Hey! Hey hey hey…..

    ….Don’t be dissin’ Paul Bunyan.

    • ralphwiggam

No offense intended, but Pecos Bill could whip Paul Bunyan’s ass before breakfast. I know that because my holy book told me so! And you have to respect my holy book because it is religion and that’s protected. :)

Funny thing is that atheists seem to actually know more about the Bible than most Christians tend to know. I may not understand every subtle nuance, but I’m pretty well-versed on its history and what makes it such a dynamic piece of literature.

Meaning you’ve read it & understood it but not taken the time to devise the mental acrobatics to excuse all the evil. Sounds like a perfect place to stop reading.

A recent study did show that atheists and agnostics have a significantly better understanding of the bible than believers. Hmmmmmmmmm…..
