Occupy Wall Street 2

En Tequila Es Verdad has the story, so I’ll just flash the pertinent pic at you:

The guy with the pepper spray is allegedly UC Davis Police Lieutenant John Pike.

Lieutenant John Pike
530-752-3989
japikeiii@ucdavis.edu

Yeah, I know lots of people will say this is taken out of context. We only see what APPEARS to be uncalled-for brutality against unarmed college students. And hey, it is non-lethal, so Pike and the UC Davis hierarchy probably thinks he displayed admirable restraint.

So we can’t say for certain, of course. I apologize for the following strong sentiments to the couple of police officers I know personally, but it APPEARS that Pike is a disgrace to the uniform. In fact, I’d have to say that it APPEARS that he’s a gutless little piece of filth.

Shame on you, UC Davis. If I was a parent with a college-age kid, or a young man or woman thinking of where to go for higher education, UCD would now be on the utter bottom of my list.

Donors: Boycott UCD

I hope anyone thinking of a bequest to UCD or the University of California generally, will call the UC President or the UCD Chancellor and tell them you’re holding off on the gift until John Pike is off the force.

Actually, if you watch the video she linked to, you can see the context and he still looks like shit. And I would just add that the way they were using the pepper spray, it isn’t necessarily non-lethal. They were actually spraying it into their mouths. Anyone with a respiratory infection, moderate allergies or any of a number of respiratory problems could find their throat completely constricted to the point where they can’t breathe.

That bastard and every other cop who was part of that bit of insanity belong in jail.

As a UC student (UCR) who has, in the past, had excellent interactions with my campus police, let me say that the actions of UC Berkeley and UC Davis officers over the past week are deplorable. My campus is basically my home, and I should feel safe while engaging in political activities there. UCR is talking about starting up our own occupation, and I shudder to see what the UCPD’s response to it will be.

Pepper Spray is not non lethal. Pepper spray has been banned in the UK because quite a high percentage of people are allergic to pepper. Had one of those poor people been been allergic We may have been dealing with a death. I also think this is a form of torture. If the police force do not think its torture I dread to think what other tactics they use. This is disgusting!

I emailed him suggesting that he be fired and denied unemployment for egregious behavior. Gratuitous actions like that only endear him to other nasty asses like him.

This is deodorant, not pepper spray. These people stink and he’s just removing the smell.

Doesn’t this qualify as battery, or even aggravated assault ? Unfortunately I expect that some form of “qualified immunity’ will be uncovered by the University authorities so that his “punishment” will amount to early retirement, or transfer to a training position.

In fact, I’d have to say that it APPEARS that he’s a gutless little piece of filth.

Yes, gutless. That was the very first word that came to mind when I first saw this.

No guts. No balls. Just riot gear and a lot of backup who were themselves gutless for not slamming this snot-nose to the pavement.

On the gripping hand, this piss ant might go down in history as the catalyst for a sea change in the way we allow our police to operate. After all, Lt. Pike is in direct contravention of the first amendment rights of these people to peaceably assemble and air grievances.

    Gutless bastard.

And for the lighter side of pepper spray in the face:

scroll about a third of the way down.

Somehow, I don’t see this guy working in law enforcement any more, unless it’s at a desk. He would just be too much of a liability. Good.

It’s actually worse than it appears, from Nathan Brown, Assistant Professor of English UC Davis:

“Police used batons to try to push the students apart. Those they could separate, they arrested, kneeling on their bodies and pushing their heads into the ground. Those they could not separate, they pepper-sprayed directly in the face, holding these students as they did so. When students covered their eyes with their clothing, police forced open their mouths and pepper-sprayed down their throats. Several of these students were hospitalized. Others are seriously injured. One of them, forty-five minutes after being pepper-sprayed down his throat, was still coughing up blood.”
