Yeah? So What Else is New?

Religious Believers Don’t Trust Atheists, Says New Study

In other news, the sea is wet, dogs bark, and bears poop in the woods.

Love this bit:

While atheists may see their disbelief as a private matter on a metaphysical issue, believers may consider atheists’ absence of belief as a public threat

This following part strikes me as probably a little bit bullshit. If the data is correct, I’ll bet they’re misinterpreting it.

Atheists also tend to trust religious people more than they trust other atheists.

“Those people who did not identify with a religion still tended to find believers to be more trustworthy,” said the third co-author, Azim Shariff of the University of Oregon.

That’s because people trust “those who fear supernatural punishment,” Shariff added …

Althought this part I can readily believe:

… and because atheists aren’t especially vocal, powerful or connected.

I do not believe that atheists said they trusted believers more than other atheists. A fish sticker on the window is a sure sign that I will take my business elsewhere. Every major gyp and scam and incompetent work I have been involved with was a “fisher.” I avoid them completely.

  • Sir Shplane, Grand Mixmaster, Knight of the Turntable

I trust deeply religious people about as far as I can throw them.

Which is not very far, considering that all my class levels are in “scrawny nerd”.

  • Gordon

I trust believers less, because I know if they do something wrong like cheat me or steal from me they can salve their conscience by apologising to their imaginary friend instead of to me.

Do I mean all believers? No.

If I know someone is a good person I will trust them. But a stranger where the only thing I know about them is that they have faith? That’s not a stranger I’m extending my trust to on credit.

Oh, I find it entirely plausible that “nones” on average tend to distrust atheists more than believers. The whole “belief in belief” claptrap and all, y’know?

  • Rasmus Odinga Gambolputty de von Ausfern….of Ulm

Unless the only atheist polled in those surveys was S.E. Crupp then that part about atheists trusting believers more is complete bullshit.
