How the Wind Does Blow

I don’t know why this intrigues me so much, but there’s a place online where you can see close-to-realtime maps of the actual WIND — Wind Map — in motion!

Click to zoom, mouse-hover to see the wind speed at any point, and look at some of the past maps to see weird and wonderful patterns of the river of atmosphere flowing over and around us.

That looks more like a map of my cowlicks.

I can’t figure out whether it’s sciencey art or arty science! Anyway, it’s made of win.

In all honesty, any way the wind blows doesn’t really matter to me.

    …To me.

Very cool, although the zooming/moving/etc needs some work!

Oooh! Awesome map. Thanks for sharing, Hank!

Nice! Of course it’s blowing in to the warmer, low-pressure areas and being twisted by Coriolis force and dragged on by the landscape–do they say how high they’re measuring? because it goes different ways at different levels.
