No religious test for public office?

Rachel Maddow reports on the North Carolina and their “no atheist” requirement for office:

My friend Herb Silverman (President of the Secular Coalition for America), experienced similar problems when he ran for office in South Carolina. He wrote about it the similarities for OnFaith.com.

And let’s don’t forget this little gem from a pretty important document:

The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

–U.S. Constitution Article VI, Clause 3
