Have you seen this viral Facebook photo of a “soul” ascending to Heaven after a deadly motorcycle crash?
A truck driver named Saul Vazquez snapped this picture and added:
I took this picture just few minutes ago from the cab of my truck it was an accident between campton and Stanton on the service road just off of the mountain parkway, zoom in and pay attention to the shadow just off the top of the state trooper hat. All I say is I hope everyone involved is okay!!
Now, I’m not one to make fun of anyone’s death, and I do see how the photo can seem shocking. However, as The Freethinker has pointed out, this is an example of the phenomenon known as pareidolia. It occurs when we perceive familiar patterns in things like clouds and pieces of toast. Most recently, I wrote about it when a couple believed their ultrasound photo revealed a presence in the womb along with their baby. So, I understand why one would share a picture like this. Again, it is fascinating. However, if we skeptics don’t do our due diligence and explain occurrences like this, some charlatan will come along and take advantage of people. Case in point, the website Catholic Say has referred to this event as a “stunning photo shows soul leaving the body.” Further, they say:
Could it be?
The Church does not specify when the soul leaves the body, either at the moment of death or at some other time. An ambulance transported the victim to a hospital where he soon died. But it is possible his soul departed his body before doctors could declare him deceased?
It’s also unusual for a soul to be photographed, but perhaps there are conditions where this is possible?
Yeah, the guy wasn’t dead yet, but maybe, just maybe, the guy’s soul needed to get out before the Ghostbusters arrived.
Who ya gonna call?
