The Best 7 Minutes, 13 Seconds Of Tom Petty’s Career

I say this with no exaggeration: I have heard all the albums and hundreds of live concerts many many times and this performance of Refugee from his Take The Highway tour features the most perfect realization of one of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ most perfect songs. It has the fullest and most exciting and explosive guitar solo for Refugee in the band’s history. The way the band slows down the rhythm in the middle, the false start they give before building back up to the climax, the cohesion between everyone, the passionate vocalization of great lyrics, and the pure musical brilliance that results from it all, just make this indisputably my favorite recording from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, either live or studio.
