A Change for the Worse

Well, as you’ve probably noticed, the blog is back to using Disqus. This wasn’t my decision, and I’m not happy about it. Disqus offers no advantages over the built-in WordPress commenting system, as far as I’m concerned. Plus, because it’s based on active scripting, it’s inherently slower and less accessible, and its moderation capabilities are substandard. It gave me constant headaches on Big Think, and I expect the same will be true here.

If you run into any problems, as I’m sure you will, please don’t hesitate to send me an e-mail. I guarantee I’ll report each and every one of them to the management.

I remember running into this on another blog and it being an annoyance to the point that I gave up trying to leave comments. Let’s see if it works this time.

  • J_JamesM

I’m sorry to hear that. I had no idea Disqus was a pain for site admins, I actually rather like using it.

  • Obliged_Cornball

    Agreed, Disqus is ass.

  • Andrew T.

Yeah, Disqus is a bummer. Not sure what Patheos is thinking…although I’ll be sticking around and reading the site regardless of what happens on their end.

(Though it seems that comments are not the only piece of technology at Patheos that’s amiss. Your banner has disappeared from the “Other Atheist Blogs” sidebar list, too.)

  • GCT

Will the “Recent Comments” tab on the side still update? It does not appear to have done so since the switch to Disqus.

Yeah I don’t know what patheos as thinking. I suspect disqus will only be a fad anyway.

Hear, hear, Adam. Fight the power!

  • GCT

At least you are getting billions of reactions right now, according to Disqus…so maybe they’re doing something right.

  • Andrew T.

I’m finding it amusing how the Disqus counter shows 1.2 billion “reactions” for every post on the front page.

Yeah, that seems to be broken. I’ll look into fixing it.

  • GeorgeLocke

One of my least favorite aspects of Disqus is that copy/pasting into the text box often changes the font. I know this is silly and that it has no effect once the comment is published, but it really annoys me.

  • Azkyroth

So did they actually just drop this on everyone without warning?

  • http://bigthink.com/blogs/daylight-atheism Adam Lee

We had a couple days’ warning, that was all. I had my choice of which commenting system to use when I came on board, so I assumed they’d let me stick with it.
