Atheist Events in NYC This Weekend

If you’re in New York City this weekend, there are two great atheist events going down!

Blackout Secular Rally Banner

First, on Saturday the 27th, the Blackout Secular Rally is happening in Flushing Meadows – Corona Park from 1:30 to 6:00. (I’ve seen different webpages say it starts either at 12:00 or at 1:30, but the official Facebook event page says 1:30, so I’m going with that.) Sponsored by Black Nonbelievers and Black Atheists of America, it’s the first atheist rally that will prominently feature nontheists of color.

Sunday Assembly NYC Banner

Then, on Sunday the 28th at 12:30, the second Sunday Assembly NYC is returning to Tobacco Road in Manhattan. They’ll be hosting Matthew Chapman, the great-great grandson of Charles Darwin. I had a great time at the first one, and there’s every reason to hope that they can repeat their success.

I’m going to be at both of these, so if you’re planning to attend, feel free to leave a comment and say hi!

Maybe you can talk to Chapman after the event and ask him not to make any more movies about atheists.

  • Adam Lee

Is that a reference to something I haven’t heard about?

  • Michael Dorian

Excellent, Adam! Thank you. The first one was a blast and hoping to ride that wave…

Chapman did the movie “The Ledge.” He was trying to portray atheists and atheism in a positive light. Instead he created a movie that fails the Bechdel test where the atheist hero sexually harasses her and treats her like an object (uses a lot of pick-up artist type “moves” on her as well). True, the atheist hero did some good things and made some good arguments, but he was also a sexist jerk. I wanted him to jump, but not for any noble reasons.

  • Adam Lee

    Ugh. Well, that’s disappointing.

  • Sean Sherman

Saw you sitting there with AJ. Thanks for bringing attention to this important celebration.
