Limbaugh’s Dumbest Statement Ever?

Rush Limbaugh has said a lot of stupid things over the years, but this one may top them all. On his radio show on Sept. 12, he actually suggested that Al Qaeda may have given up Osama Bin Laden to be killed in order to help Obama get reelected because he helps them so much.

One has to wonder which Al Qaeda leaders might have made that decision, given all of the ones who’ve been killed under Obama. Anwar al-Awlaki, one of the leaders of Al Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula, was killed on Obama’s order. Abu Hafs al-Shahri, head of Al Qaeda’s Pakistan operations, was killed in August, 2011. Atiyah ‘Abd al-Rahman was killed around the same time. Ilyas Kashmiri, Ammar al-Wa’ili, Abu Ali al-Harithi, and Ali Saleh Farhan are all dead. So are Noordin Muhammad, Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, Saleh al-Somali, ‘Abdallah Sa’id, Hussein al-Yemeni, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, Sheik Saeed al-Masri and Hamza al-Jawfi, all leaders in various Al Qaeda groups from Pakistan to Yemen to Somalia to Iraq. Ayman al-Zawahiri is pretty much the only one left.

I’m sure he’ll find something to top that this afternoon.

  • imrryr

Reminds me of those rumors from 2003 that Saddaam shipped all of his WMDs to Syria so the we couldn’t find them. You know, instead of actually using them to stop an invasion.

d cwilson – yes, but he might need a little nap. That crazy is exhausting!

Limbaugh’s Dumbest Statement Ever so far?

Fixed that for you. Because I’m sure’s there’s plenty more where that piece of idiocy came from.

Ayman al-Zawahiri is pretty much the only one left.

Think I read somewhere that he’s pretty unpopular and uncharismatic too.

Mind you, sadly there always seem to be plenty of replacements and new (yuk) “affiliates” to replace the one’s that are killed off.

Actually on second thought, I still reckon his repeated vile abuse of Sandra Fluke over her medical use of contraception was worse.

But that’d certainly be up there in the top ten.

  • I’m not a connoisseur of Limbaugh’s stupidity like many of the people here, but this certainly sounds like a worthy contender for the title.

Naturally, one part of me suspects it’s a knowing lie that counts on audience stupidity, since it plays to the party line that Republicans are tough on terrorism and defense while Democrats are weak, and this serves to immunize the audience to the counter-evidence that Bin Laden was killed under Obama’s watch. Given that wingnuts in the media often seem to buy their own hype as time goes on, though, I’m not going to rule out the idea that Limbaugh actually believes it, since he’s been at this for a long time.

And it flies in the face of what we do know about how they located UBL. It was extensive, painstaking intelligence gathering. And not everyone believed it. Most thought the chances were good that it was not UBL. If they had an inside track, there wouldn’t have been any doubt that they had UBL. The only doubt would have been whether the operation could be successful.

So, I guess one could argue that only Obama knew the deal that was made. But that it hard to believe–that type of intelligence gets vetted pretty throughly.

My guess is that Rush was playing “What If” whilst smoking a bit of dope between commercials.

  • Oh good grief Ed, it’s so obvious! Bin Laden, al-Awlaki, al-Shahri, al-Rahman, and the rest are all political suicide “bombers.”

  • iainr

Clearly al-Zawahiri and Obama are in cahoots and using the US military to further the former’s internal purge of potential leadership rivals!

You just have to understand presuppositional apologetics. Begin from the fact that every event is is bad for liberals and good for Republicans, then work off that. See Mark Halperin: John McCain having 8 houses is actually bad news for Obama and good news for McCain.

  • dean

It may be a stupid statement to normal people, but to his regular listeners it is another key piece of the puzzle that helps to explain how the current president is plotting the destruction of God’s Own Country and People.

If only Limbaugh knew that Hitler deliberately let the Russians conquer Berlin so it could start the Cold War that would would lead to Russia’s fall but only after it lost a fortune in Afghanistan and forced the US to initially train bin Ladin so that Obama could have him killed.

    Its all Adolph’s master plan!

  • Oh snap, wait till they figure out that a not insignificant amount of people somehow give credit to Romney and the republicans for it anyway.

    Hah, suck that terrorists!

  • Abby Normal

This proves Obama is in cahoots with Al Qaeda. Look at all the martyrs he’s given them!

To paraphrase what I said about Jim Bakker in another thread. In a just world, Limbaugh would be working the graveyard shift at a rural gas station, living in the back room, and showering at the Y.

The fact that anyone, anyone at all, let alone millions of people, takes him seriously makes me despair. The fact that his grotesque treatment of Sandra Fluke didn’t turn him into a pariah makes me despair. The fact that he is the de facto leader of one of the two major political parties in teh US makes me despair. The fact that I have relatives who listen to him REALLY makes me despair.

This isn’t an exaggeration, or at least not much of one. I really think of these as signs that we’re doomed.

How soon before we hear this on Faux News prefaced by, “Some people are saying…”

So if I have this straight, militant Islamists gave up bin Laden because he was washed up, and this would give political capital to Obama, who would ride that capital to another term as president, and having a Democrat [sic] president would make it more likely that Islamists destroy Israel and all the Jews rather than a Republican president. Because, umm, the first 4 years wasn’t nearly enough time. And because, umm, while the US was waging wars on multiple fronts over the past decade, that’s not a good time to attack Israel. And because, umm, while our economy has been in the tank for the past 5 years, it’s better to wait for our economic recovery before attacking Israel. No. What Islamists need is a second term Democrat president right now, and then Israel will fall! And oh by the way, Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood.

And apparently no one gave the memo to all the Islamists violently protesting at our embassies in the middle east.

And apparently there’s no correlation between the state of the economy and who gets elected. Or between the amount of money spent and who gets elected.

Thankfully we have that mental giant, Rush Limbaugh, to see through the Islamists’ ruse and warn us of our impending fate. *Whew* Dodged a bullet again.

perhaps Obama has always been in charge in al queda and now he’s just eliminating rivals … I’m copyrighting that Rush so don’t steal it without paying royalties

A nice antidote is to read history. You’ll find there were periods where things were even more fucked-up than now where we bounced right back and moved well beyond. The arc of moral progress (MLK Jr.?) is bending in our favor.

Consider how modern-day bigots can’t maim, enslave, or kill their hated others at near the rate they used to enjoy. Now all they mostly have is their rhetoric and some reprehensible laws though the law advances in our favor. E.g,. DADT had its first anniversary recently where the odds are now approaching zero it’ll ever be repealed. Though they can still abuse kids by denying them an optimal future with their indoctrinal efforts, even that’s declining for most except for those unfortunate children of conservative Christians being home-schooled or attending conservative Christian private schools.

The one, nay sole, key factor that could be prove me wrong is conservative Christians providing the voting base which effectively stops sufficient mitigation of climate change.

Thank you Michael Heath, I see a glimmer of hope.

I kind of suspect that this is one of those things Limbaugh thinks are jokes – a hyperbolic “comedic exaggeration”.

Why such a remark could be considered by anyone to be funny is beyond me, but Limbots have used the “it’s just a joke” excuse for outlandish Limbaughisms in the past, and this seems to be in the same vein.

The protesters overrunning our embassies were Republican operatives out to discredit Obama. They were working on Breitbart’s last project.

This “just theorizing” stuff is easy.

Hey you lot, stop giving Rush ideas, it’s a good thing that I doubt he reads this blog :). Though as said up thread, Rush is really messing with heads of Republicans who think Romney was responsible for OBL’s death.

  • “You’ll find there were periods where things were even more fucked-up than now where we bounced right back and moved well beyond.”

Do you suppose that anyone said that to the christians in 2nd century Rome, just before the guy in the olive wreath hat said:

“Adepto mihi nonnullus popcorn quod permissum Leo vado!*”. {;>)

I think the funniest thing I ever read about Limbaugh will be his obituary. I can’t wait!

    * “Get me some popcorn and let the lions go!”

Michael, You’re right, or at least partially so. I am old enough (albeit just barely) to remember segregated bathrooms, bus station waiting rooms, and water fountains. I didn’t go to school with a black kid until my junior year of high school (and even then were there maybe a half dozen in a student body of 2400). I honestly didn’t think there would be an African-American president in my lifetime, and I didn’t think single-sex marriage would even be on the table, let alone the law in some states.

But that said…I also didn’t anticipate the insane racist backlash to Mr. Obama’s election (I’m not so naive that I didn’t expect some, but I had no idea how bad it would be). Ditto the frothing-at-the-mouth opposition to same-sex marriage. Maybe they’re the last hurrah of a dying breed—I hope so.

And damn it, Rush Limbaugh is still on the air, still has millions of listeners, is still filthy rich, and still all but runs the GOP. And there are Rush wannabees all over the airwaves, dozens of them for every sane voice.

Also disheartening is the fact that this election is even close (although just maybe Romney sealed his fate with the video going around now). For all his flaws, Obama doesn’t come near to being the train wreck Romney in the White House would be. That so many people can so easily be persuaded to vote against their own interests (including lots of my family members), is well, discouraging.
