Why Women Can’t Be Allowed to Drive

If you think the ridiculous arguments used by the Christian right in America to justify their authoritarian policies are bad, the Muslim right in Saudi Arabia is even worse. Now they’ve decided that letting women drive will lead to premarital sex and turn men gay.

Allowing women drivers in Saudi Arabia will tempt them into sex, promote pornography and create more homosexuals, according to some conservative Muslim scholars.

Academics at the Majlis al-Ifta’ al-A’ala, which is Saudi Arabia’s highest religious council, said the relaxation of the rules would inevitably lead to “no more virgins”…

The academics, working in conjunction with Kamal Subhi, a former professor at the conservative King Fahd University, produced the conclusions in a report for the country’s legislative assembly, the Shura Council.

It warned that allowing women to drive would “provoke a surge in prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce”.

Within 10 years of the ban being lifted, it claimed, there would be “no more virgins” in the Islamic kingdom.

And you thought it was birth control that was turning men gay; turns out it’s women driving cars.

What, kids are going to emerge from the womb pre-deflowered?

  • illdoittomorrow

Well, that right there is a new low of slutty sluttitude: female infants being not-virgins in the womb!! At conception even!

  • “But men and women are different, right? Did you ever notice how men drive like this [impression of man driving] and women drive like this [impression of woman getting harassed and arrested by the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice]?” /Saudi comic

  • dingojack

wouldn’t the rise in (female) pre-marital sex (’cause males don’t participated in that pre-martial sex, no siree bob, it’s just hot girl-on-girl action apparently) be offset by the rise in male homosexuality?

What are they complaining about anyway? Surely it means that clerics will have more (and ‘looser’) women to abuse within their parishioners. I’d think that they’d consider that a ‘win-win’. @@

  • Mr Ed

I’m glad that they have nailed down what will happen but they are still just a bit vague on why this will happen.

  • Try driving in a burqa!

The enburqa’d driver probably can’t see to park, or turn, or reverse, or really even to go forwards.

In fact all they can do is to stop in the thing in some secluded spot.

So what’s the only thing you can do in a car that’s not moving and is in a secluded spot?

We all know what that leads to…

  • Step 1: Women drive cars

    Step 2: ?

    Step 3: Gays!

  • It’s sad to see the screeds that result when someone assumes that sex is the one and only reason why people do things. Makes me wonder about projection.

Of course, one benefit I suspect would result from lifting the ban: Some women would be better protected against rape because they’re able to drive to the market instead of walk. I doubt many of the misogynists would see that as a benefit, though.

I have never, ever understood this virgin fetish.

Even when I was a conservative, evangelical Christian, I didn’t understand it. I mean, I believed in sexual morality, but if someone, before marriage, sins, like everyone does, so what if it happens to be this one particular sin?

‘Course things like liberty and equality for all (and, really, this is all about keeping the wimminz in their place) didn’t quite mesh well with the Christianity I was a part of, so that didn’t even last until the end of high school.

The real problem from their point of view is that the men would lose some control over the women. If women have freedom of movement they might start making more of their own decisions. If they make more of their own decisions, some of the decisions might involve sex. Allah forbid than women get any control over their own lives.

Someday the women of Saudi Arabia, (and really, all women), are finally going to learn how magically powerful they are. They can turn men gay by driving, working, taking birth control, and having a problem with rape. They can reduce men to being “sissies” (read: having emotions besides anger, shame, and a nigh-uncontrollable lust that erupts whenever men are around women who expose to much skin and try to have opinions) just by having sex and cutting their hair too short! When this day comes, men will finally become extinct and women will institute a gynocracy in which lesbianism is the only acceptable sex and any surviving males are made to work in the mines. Christmas will be replaced with a ceremony depicting the abortion of the baby Jesus! Read Rev. 13:12-15. Wake up people!

  • Actually, most of the adult women* I know who drive aren’t virgins. And of the adult women I know who don’t drive**, fifty percent of them are virgins. There might be something to this.

*American women over the age of 18, an age by which 58% of women have had sex according to wikipedia.

    **Sample size: two.

  • They’re right, though. Relaxing these laws can only be a precursor to relaxing other laws on the march toward an ideal, tolerant modern society.

    HA! That made me laugh.

I have never, ever understood this virgin fetish.

It’s about controlling a man’s property. “Damaged goods” is not just a nasty put-down, but the way many misogynist systems classify women – in order to control them.

This question was definitively answered by the great philosopher Bruce Springsteen when he wrote “Honey I just wonder what it feels like in the back Of your pink Cadillac”

For those that are curious but lazy:

    Revelation 13:12-15

“12 And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. 14 And he deceives those[e] who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. 15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.”

Lots of relevant stuff to driving there then.

  • cry4turtles

I was deflowered way before I learned to drive. Kinda refutes their conclusion. I suspect one of these ogers has a fetish with Freddie Mercury and his “I’m in love with my car” and knows that once a woman has control of 8-6-4 cylinders, she ain’t coming back!!!

  • criticaldragon1177

    Ed Brayton,

Seems there are sexist men everywhere that blame women for all that is evil, and to think that people here have a problem with women drivers.

  • People, please! Think about the breakdown in social norms women driving causes! If they’re all driving, then who will the men who are out cruising for chicks whistle at?

  • baal

It’s amazing there are any straight males left!

  • syskill

Not that it’s any less batshit crazy, but I read the religious council’s statements as saying that allowing women to drive would lead to a surge in homosexuality among women, not men.

  • naturalcynic

It couldn’t be clearer than Aretha franklin’s We;ll be riding the freeway to love in my pink Cadillac

  • criticaldragon1177

    #23 Naturalcynic,

I wonder if cars ever make love. Boy cars probably think that pink Cadillac is hot! 🙂

  • John Hinkle

This is lowdown shoddy scholarship. They apparently don’t know that heterosexual males turn gay from thinking about hot, sweaty, man-on-man buttsex. I bet the Homosexual Manifesto wasn’t even on their bibliography. And they call themselves academics? Disgraceful.

  • lofgren

    I wonder which came first:

Do they believe that having sex with a woman is icky and gross, and that led them to hate women?

Or did they start out hating women, and that led them to the conclusion that hetero sex is so icky and gross that straight men have to basically be forced to do it lest they turn completely gay.

On the one hand, I feel like there might be a healthier way for these guys to deal with their lack of interest in sex with females than oppressing half the population. I don’t even mean healthier for the women who are being oppressed. I mean healthier for the angry men who feel like they have no choice but to degrade themselves with vaginal intercourse, yet find the possibility of sex with other men so powerfully alluring.

If only some brilliant scholar would come along with some revolutionary new option for those poor bastards.

On the other hand, fuck those guys.

Hmm… I think there might just be a way to combine these two options…

  • Uncle Glenny

… and women will institute a gynocracy in which lesbianism is the only acceptable sex and any surviving males are made to work in the mines.

Some of us will be doing the catering. Those lesbian potlucks can get pretty monotonous after a while.

I have never, ever understood this virgin fetish.

It’s about controlling a man’s property. “Damaged goods” is not just a nasty put-down, but the way many misogynist systems classify women – in order to control them.

Women as property is part of it but it also has a lot to do with the drive to produce an heir (which can also be about property). The kind of men who think like this hate the idea of raising a child who is not genetically theirs, let alone a step son who might inherit, so they get paranoid about the remote possibility someone else might impregnate ‘their’ wives. That’s why the virginity requirement – making sure she couldn’t have been pregnant before the wedding, is tied to rules restricting women’s freedom of action – making sure she never meets another man who might make her pregnant.

  • I have never, ever understood this virgin fetish.

Well, in patrilineal societies with rigid class structures, it is rather important to know exactly who your father is. Having the woman be a virgin at marriage and having harsh penalties for adultery were ways to ensure that a married man’s child was really his child in a age where reliable birth control and any kind of DNA test didn’t exist. Of course, since a man could screw around all he wanted because children born outside of marriage weren’t legally his, sexism was still a factor.

At least, that’s how an anthropology professor explained it to me.

  • lofgren

I suspect that the virgin fetish is much more ancient than any extant or easily studied patrilineal system with rigid class structures. I have no evidence, but it just seems like the kind of thing that would have been introduced at some point in a highly irrational fashion, and then repurposed over the generations to fit each culture that grew out of the previous. It could be something as simple as a warlord with a virgin fetish.

It just has the whiff of something clung to for totally irrational purposes, and then conserved and rationalized by later generations who grew up being taught that virginity was a virtue and made up their own reasons to fit their current circumstances.

  • Muslim men in the middle east must be incredibly pathetic if all it takes to make them gay is a woman driving. The stupid, it burns.

  • dingojack

breadknitter – It seems that all the Abrahamic religions worship a variant of the Wizard of Oz.

  • lofgren

That’s dirty pool, Dingo. Drawing similarities between the Wizard of Oz and the Abrahamic god is too easy, and should not be discussed in polite company.

  • igeek

I suspect that the virgin fetish is much more ancient than any extant or easily studied patrilineal system with rigid class structures.

I suspect it has a lot to do with frail male egos… The kind that can’t handle the thought of having his sexual preformance compared with that of another man.

    Academics at…

    The academics,…

You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

  • Can we get a definitive list of the things which won’t turn men gay?

It’s not that it bothers me, it’s just that if I’m going to be turned gay, I need some notice so I can improve my grooming to suit my new orientation.

  • ospalh

Women driving leads to homosexuality? That can’t be true!

After all, women are allowed to drive in Iran, and they don’t have homosexuals there.

No, really. I mean, Ahmadinejad wouldn’t lie, would he.

  • criticaldragon1177

#37. Ahmadinejad is a sick bigoted man.
