Wingnut: Public Schools Just Like Hitler Youth

Mr. Godwin, call your office. We’ve got a live one. Colin Gunn, a homeschooling advocate who made a documentary called “IndoctriNation: Public Schools and the Decline of Christianity in America,” went on a radio show recently and said that public school “indoctrination” is just like the Nazis creating the Hitler Youth. Oh, and they’re mentally molesting children:

Gunn: Draw a parallel between Nazi Germany where you have an authoritarian government that took over the whole nation, partially through the youth movement by co-opting all of the youth movement into the Hitler Youth, and therefore indoctrinating them into the class of this unbelief and this idolatry of the state. And so sadly that’s what we’re seeing very much today and we wonder why, why can’t people understand the abortion issue or these other issues that are political—well it’s because they’ve been indoctrinated. And we really can’t fix any political issue until we fix the public school system, controlling the future of America by controlling the hearts and minds of all the children that are sent there.

And the host of the who, Vic Eliason of Christian Youth America, said that teaching kids about evolution and other things the wingnuts don’t like is mental molestation:

Eliason: Right now the news is a blare with a man who molested children, and he’s going to prison for the rest of his life. That’s physical molestation. But folks, there is mental molestation going on in the public school, and the people are getting by scot-free. And I’m not criticizing many fine Christian teachers who are trying to do their very best as they are employed in the public schools, but the molestation is a philosophy that is being pushed over all that literally is a molestation of the mind and nobody has a penalty for that.

You know who else breathed air? Hitler.

But all this would change if only children were forced to pray to the Protestant Christian god right?

  • shouldbeworking

He’s right! We indoctinate the students so that they think everyone has the same rights as everyone else, regardless of race, sex, gender, sexual orientation, nation of origin, colour or religion or disability. How did he ever discover our most firmly held secret?

Never mind the fact that public schools are under local control (school boards, anyone?) specifically to keep public education a matter of community standards and mores. So if the schools in Gunn’s community are so horrifically bad, then maybe he should move to a different community.

I understand that Saudi Arabia and Iran are nice for those wishing to live in a theocracy.

Simple projection since we know whose actually indoctrinating kids to the point it’s a particularly insidious form of child abuse.

I do admit being indoctrinated to some extent looking back on my K-12 education. That would be the lies told about the Pilgrims seeking to establish religious freedom; and that the U.S. population was so exceptionally different from people in other countries.

And so sadly that’s what we’re seeing very much today and we wonder why, why can’t people understand the abortion issue or these other issues that are political—well it’s because they’ve been indoctrinated.

But at least the Nazi had the right side of the political question, German women were not allowed to get abortions.

    Right, Colin Gunn?

I always get a laugh out of clowns like Gunn who equate evolution and abortion with Frankenberger. The fact is that Frankenberger rejected common descent in Mein Kampf and the Nazi Party platform in 1932 called for making abortion illegal.

And we really can’t fix any political issue until we fix the public school system, controlling the future of America by controlling the hearts and minds of all the children that are sent there.

He claims indoctrination by public schools with the proof that children do not agree with him. Then he says the only way to fix it is to… indoctrinate them!

If this is not a case of godwin projection, I do not know what is.

How else could we ever get an American Pope?

  • Pierce R. Butler

… this idolatry of the state.

I never put it in quite those words, but this captures succinctly the feeling I had every time I was coerced into saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

Indeed, when I was in school my mind was penetrated by their hard lessons, against my will, on nearly a daily basis. My molesters forced me again and again to swallow their instruction and even more perversely, regurgitate them back at them. If I did well I was rewarded with praise and small tokens such as gold stars. If I did poorly, I was punished, even going so far as to give me extra molestations during recess or after school. Over time I became so indoctrinated even began to enjoy the lessons. So much so that by the time I reach high school I was voluntarily giving up my free period and lunch to attend additional sessions. I couldn’t get enough abuse, or “knowledge” as they called it.

And its effects have continued to haunt me through adulthood. It affects every aspect of my life. I can’t have a normal patriarchal relationship. I need a partner, someone who stimulates my mind with novel thoughts. I spend hours reading journals instead of the Bible, solving puzzles instead of praying, and discussing whatever morsel of information happens to sparked my fancy instead of evangelizing. Gone is my correct deference to authority. I apply reason to guide my actions and base it on empirical evidence. Truly, the public school system is the scourge of the modern world.

Let’s not forget generalissimo Francisco Franco of Spain who took a republic and turned it into a brutal dictatorship (non-Godwin entree); a model that Mr. Gunn might find intriguing. The Church’s own right-wing dictator who made all the bishops squeal with delight when he banned abortions. There’s always been a trend of the Church supporting strongmen that could bring the kind of order that kept the people in line and headed to the pews.

In Franco’s Spain, he was good to the Catholic church, which gained in power, and the church was good to him. An authoritarian’s dream if I ever did see one.

Yeah, but I bet Hitler could do it through his nose…

“Public Schools Just Like Hitler Youth”

Fun fact: The American Pledge of Allegiance “flag salute” used to be identical to the Nazi salute.

  • slc1

    Re Irreverend Bastard @ #13

Actually, it’s a Roman salute which the Nazis stole from them.

  • bmiller

Actually…public schools do have a somewhat questionable history dating back not to Hitler but the Prussian state. And indoctrination was (and cretainly does) remain a critical goal. We need good passive workers and citizens is the argument. You all certainly don’t really believe that schools exist to “teach us critical thinking” or other vague liberal shiboleths, do you?

His real problem is that the indoctrination does not emphasize the modern fundamentalist heresies strongly enough.

  • NitricAcid

@14- Stole? The Romans weren’t using it any more…

And davem @ 12 wins today’s shiny new internet!

  • dan4

@6: Why do you always refer to Hitler as “Frankenberger?”

  • fifthdentist

I was indoctrinated in Christianist crap until I was 15, forced to attend even though I had figured out it was utter bollocks years before that. When we went to Baptist conference centers it was easy to score with the Christianist girls, so it had that going for it.

  • dingojack

    NiticAcid (#16) – well actually

And let us not forget António de Oliveira Salazar, right-wing dictator of Portugal from 1932 to 1968 (died 1970).
