Thank You, Marcus Ranum

Marcus Ranum has been commenting on my blog and many others for as long as I can remember. He’s also an incredibly generous guy, funding scholarships to send six young women, including FTB’s own Miriam Mogilevsky and Kate Donovan, to the Women in Secularism 2 conference in May. Like any large and diverse group, the secular community has its flaws. But I am continually astonished by the generosity of so many people within it. Thank you, Marcus.

About Ed Brayton

After spending several years touring the country as a stand up comedian, Ed Brayton tired of explaining his jokes to small groups of dazed illiterates and turned to writing as the most common outlet for the voices in his head. He has appeared on the Rachel Maddow Show and the Thom Hartmann Show, and is almost certain that he is the only person ever to make fun of Chuck Norris on C-SPAN.

That was a great thing he did. Marcus Ranum did a great thing, and deserves all the kind words given for this. It was quite generous. Not that my opinion means anything, but he is someone deserving of respect, both for this and the quality of his contributions.

Now I am going to kick puppies to balance out the universe.

It is so rare and wonderful to find a “thank you” on the internet that is not ironic.

    Yes, thank you Marcus Ranum!

I was one of those who received the grant. It’s not often that I’m speechless, but, I’m speechless. It was a huge surprise, and I am -so- grateful to Marcus.

    Great guy, eh?

  • Modusoperandi

You just say that because you don’t know his dark secret. He’s secretly also a good person. Not all that dark, now that I think about it.

Plus he was a Bond villain in the original true story on which they based The Man with the Golden Gun. His evil plot was to harness the power of the sun for pollution-free electricity. Not much of a villain, really.

    And furthermore, good work, Marcus.

    Nice job!

It is well known that Mr. Ranum and I are not what you might call fond of each other (a vast understatement). However, here’s an attaboy for Mr. Ranum.

    Well done, Marcus Ranum.

Thumbs up, Marcus Ranum! You rockum.

Marcus Ranum and I have had differences (and will no doubt have more of them, over time). Otoh, like Michael Heath–and slc1, James Hanley and too many other people to mention here–my disagreements are with his conclusions on some issues, not rediculous assertions or bald faced lies.

That is some serious generosity, Marcus; good on ya!

    Nice work, Marcus

PS: when are you going to reprise your role as a Bond villain? Will you be stroking your pet alligator again?

    Enquiring minds ….. :)

    Re democommie @ #9

I would have to take some issue with Mr. democommie on this claim. Although it is mostly true to on this blog, over at Mano Singham’s blog, he made a claim that the current unrest in Syria was fomented by the CIA. Although it may be that the CIA, along with Saudi Arabian intelligence, MI6, the Deuxieme Bureau, and the Mossad are covertly supporting at least some of the rebel factions, there is not a jot or a tittle of evidence that they instigated it. As far as the Mossad goes, the attitude of the Government of Israel up to rather recently was that it preferred Assad, bad as he is, under the theory that better the devil you know then the devil you know not. Of course, by this time, it would appear that Assad is a lost cause so Israel has fallen into line.

Noted. I am unfamilar with both that post/thread and the situation re: causes/instigators in the current Syrian revolution.

    Thank you, Marcus.
