NOM Leader to Get Honorary Degree From Non-Existent University

Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, is set to receive an honorary degree from a university that does not exist. This “honor” comes courtesy of the Coalition of African-American Pastors, a group of black wingnuts who really have it in for gay people.

The anti-gay Coalition of African American Pastors has announced that National Organization for Marriage’s Brian Brown is scheduled to receive an “honorary doctorate of letters” this weekend. The degree will be conferred by American Urban University.

Except that American Urban University doesn’t seem to exist.

According to Bizpedia, the president of American Urban University was Bishop George D. McKinney from St. Stephen’s Cathedral Church of God in Christ in San Diego, CA. Bishop McKinney is one of the organizers of The Coalition of African American Pastors, the group giving Mr. Brown the honorary degree.

Congratulations to Brian Brown. A fake degree from a fake university is the perfect means of honoring such a person.

  • Pshaw. I have an Order of Merit, First Degree conferred upon me by the Romulal Star Republic.

  • Mr Ed

At least I had to send in two box tops and 50¢ to Battle Creek, MI to get my PhD and junior star command credentials.

  • And it is being given by a self-appointed bishop.

I’ve always found it odd how many anti-intellectual have disdain for academic institutions, but feel the need to ape the trappings of those institutions with fake degrees, calling themselves “Dr.”, and claiming to have “studies”.

  • Michael Heath

One of the highlights of my observing the gay rights fight is Dan Savage wiping the floor with Brian Brown in their post-dinner date at Mr. Savage’s home. This debate can be found on YouTube. Mr. Brown had nothin’ whereas Savage is an articulate, coherent, and compelling advocate for equality.

I especially appreciated Mr. Savage’s emotional maturity. Brown’s infuriatingly dishonest and outlandish fallacies were met with calm, reasoned, convincing rebuttals, and yet Savage was also able to instill a proper dose of passion which I do think is critical and very difficult to do in the proper dose. One side had a sufficiently framed set of factual premises, the other – nothing but rhetorical and logical fallacies coupled to special pleading and weapons-grade projection on who are the victims in this debate.

People need to appreciate that the bigotry, hatred, and attempts to ostracize gays inflicted on them by conservative Christian denominations and their members causes real pain, suffering, and in many cases – tragedies. Yet Savage’s relentless and logical counters also provided no room for Brown to hide, including the sanctuary of one’s opponents getting too outraged. Savage never provided any type of sanctuary to Brown. Bravo to him.

I think we should all be seeking people who consistently make effective compelling finely-crafted arguments. Arguments based on facts and reason, not rhetorical or logical fallacies coupled to strawmen and avoidance of our opponent’s best arguments (if any exist). Savage serves as a role model for me because he takes down his opponent’s best arguments. For me, Savage sits on the more passionate side of that spectrum where he’s located close to Andrew Sullivan. Sam Harris would be an exemplar of the dispassionate end of that same spectrum. Dispassion his opponents find often infuriating in a very entertaining way for those who are fans of great arguments.

Brian will be receiving an award not worth the paper it is printed on. Congrats. A perfect honor for sure.

I wholeheartedly agree with Michael Heath’s characterization of Dan Savage: compelling, compassionate and articulate.

That’s quite a superfluously redundant name, don’t you think?

And here the article’s title had me hoping that the lovely campus on the Miskatonic might be involved in the story in some way. Now that’s a degree that can earn you some respect in certain circles.

Well, the name “The Church of Jesus and God and the Bible and all that jazz” was already taken.

    It’s cargo cult academia.

If I’m not mistaken, the Coalition of African-American Pastors is a NOM-created group, part of their plan to drive a wedge between the African American and LGBT communities.

Not really. The Church of God in Christ is a medium sized (as such things go) Pentecostal denomination with a predominantly African-American membership. Apparently, they don’t have pastors, only bishops. The church of a bishop is a cathedral, even when it is just a little store-front shop in a strip mall, so the name makes about as much sense as possible, given the context. The only thing missing in the name is a comma after “cathedral.”

  • Hercules Grytpype-Thynne

    @Gregory in Seattle

You don’t need the comma if you interpret “cathedral” as an adjective, which is in fact how the word originated (meaning “where the cathedra – the bishop’s seat – is”). The term “cathedral church” is not uncommon.

In the wake of internal documents from NOM leaked earlier this year, Owens was asked by CNN’s Dan Merica about having a connection with the anti-gay group. The pastor confirmed the anti-gay group compensates him.

“They pay my salary,” Owens said.

It’s a fake degree from a fake university from a group paid for by Brian Brown. At least he isn’t crowning himself in the House chambers.

  • Just wondering when Brown will be outed by his boyfriend. One of these days his BF will reealize he’s a haterr and the truth will come out, identical to the hater Ted Haggard, head of the national evangelicals who got the heave ho from his BF, when he realzed who was really fcking who.
