Wingnut Delivers a Non-Sequitur Fest

Rep. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota (state rep, not federal) delivered the commencement address at the University of Mary, which, you may have guessed, is a Catholic college. What he delivered was a series of bewildering non-sequiturs that added up to little more than a list of complaints about how the world wasn’t the way he wanted it to be.

Just in the last several days, a Bismarck news anchor mistakenly uttered vulgarity on live television. He’s been heralded by celebrities from New York to California as some sort of pop icon. His bosses have been called goons because they fired him.

We learned this week that the Pentagon is vetting its guide on religious tolerance with a group that compared Christian evangelism to rape, and advocated that military personnel and colluding chaplains who proselytize should be court-marshalled.

Forty years ago, the United States Supreme Court sanctioned abortion on demand. And we wonder why our culture sees school shootings so often…

Innocent people in New York have airplanes flown into their places of work, and marathoners in Boston are victims of bombs, yet Christianity is singled out as bigotry in our public institutions because politicians and academics lack the courage to speak truth. We’ve normalized perversion and perverted God’s natural law to the point where the only thing not tolerated anymore is a stand for truth.

Where does he get the idea that Christianity is “singled out as bigotry”? The Muslims who flew those planes into buildings were even worse than the typical Christian when it comes to bigotry. But guess what? They don’t actually have any influence over policy. Bigots like Cramer do. It’s like someone who is shooting at you with a shotgun pointing out that you’re not paying enough attention to another person with a grenade launcher attacking someone else in another country. The shotgun is going to be your primary concern.

Nope, this weapon of mass confusion does have the dubious honor of representing me in Congress. My apologies to the rest of the nation.

  • “court-marshalled“? It looks like his speechwriters don’t know how to use spellcheck (or rely on it too much!).

    Zeno @2,

What? Clearly he was just trying to convey the image of chaplains being paraded into a courtroom.

@2: Huh? It was a commencement SPEECH, not an op-ed. The spelling error obviously came from a transcription mistake by the Huffington Post (which was reporting on the speech, and where Ed got the excerpt of the speech from). The numbskull spelling obviously came from the HP, and not from one of the Cramer’s speechwriters.

    From the article:

But in a speech this month, Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) pointed to different culprits: the legalization of abortion and a demise in religious values.

Another example of the Huffington’s finely-tuned sense for language.

  • Ed:

Cramer wasn’t doin’ a one-off guest thing at the U of Mary. He’s an adjunct professor, has a seat on the board of the school and is involved in fundraising. Hardly an unknown entity so we can lump the school admin in with him as being theopublican shitbags.

According to Wiki, Cramer and his wife became custodians of a young child who was the son of a young woman that one of their sons had a relationship with (according to Wiki, the real father is attempting to gain custody). It seem, based on the information from the Wiki piece that Cramer and his family pulled a fast one on the kid’s dad–now that would establish his Refuckthepublican cred.

So, it appears to me that he MIGHT be a lying fucking scumbag, quelle sooprize!

    @ dan4:

Is there a point hidden in there, somewhere? Ed appears to accept that Huffpost’s quote IS from the speech. I haven’t been able to find a transcript, at this point I’m guessing that Cramer’s not gonna make it available. I did send an e-mail to a reporter at the local paper requesting a transcript if one is available but haven’t heard back from him yet.

Regardless that, it appears that Cramer is pretty fucking happy with himself re; his speech. Maybe he’s fulfilling his requirement for the Crusader/Martyr merit badge from Opus Dei.

    a demise in religious values

I think that’s also known as The Resurrection™.
