Therapist: I Can Change Gay Brains

“Ex-gay” therapist Jerry Mungadze went on a Christian TV show last week and claimed that not only can he make gay people straight, he can magically change their brain structure from gay to straight. He offered neither evidence nor even an explanation of this — what changes, exactly? And where are the brain scans that show this?

Warren Throckmorton contacted Michael Bailey at Northwestern University, who has a lab that could produce such scans before and after therapy, and he offered the use of them to prove Mungadze right or wrong. Wanna take a bet on whether Mungadze will accept that offer? I say no and I’m offering 10-1 odds.

Mere brain scans can’t show his success. Only the money of the desperate, the foolish, and the just-generally-kind-of-mean can reveal it.

Well Gay brains look pinkish, and straight brains look…

I feel like calling this guy a ‘therapist’ concedes far too much legitimacy.

    How about quack?

A man came up to me and said

I’d like to change your mind

By hitting it with a rock, he said

    Though I am not unkind….

Sorry, a little TMBG came over me…

Changing brains is easy but you do have to watch out as assistants keep dropping them and grabbing abnormal ones to substitute.

Well, any good therapist can change brains, including gay ones – if you’re severely depressed, and they help you get better, your brain changes the same way it does if you find a med that helps. Not going to make you any less gay though…

    No bet.

I made the mistake of checking out this guy’s website and I would agree with composer99, except I fear that might be an insult to quacks. Not surprisingly, there are no academic papers listed, no evidence of his miracle therapy or technique and no indication of any medical training at all. This guy is a trained psychologist, so how he could possibly interpret brain scans is beyond me.

This reminds me of the (true) fact that when computer typesetting was just getting going, some early hyphenation routines would produce 1 hyphenation point in one particular word, `the-rapist’.

Can he do it in the opposite direction too? That might be a good party trick.

    @CPT Doom:

“This guy is a trained psychologist, so how he could possibly interpret brain scans is beyond me.”

Actually, the guy has a PhD in something called counselor education and claims a minor in psychology, whatever the hell the latter supposedly means. Point is, he isn’t a trained psychologist, which is why he can’t and doesn’t call himself a psychologist.

While reading scans isn’t automatically part of training as a psychologist, there are psychologists who learn to read various scans for their research and use them regularly. I know several who do so. Michael Bailey, the Northwestern professor who offered his services to conduct and evaluate scans of Mungadze’s conversion cases, is an academic psychologist.

Actually that might be a useful Get Out Of Shit Free card for those Republican politicians like Mr. Wide Stance and preachers like the guy who took the masseur on holiday with him:

“Why yesterday, I was just having a quiet drink with my old mate Jerry, and the next thing I know I find myself getting busy at a glory hole! That Mungadze … he is such a practical joker!”

No bet. No way, no how.
