One of the more amusing memes coming out in the wake of new revelations about government surveillance is the one to the effect that “gosh, Obama has even lost the ACLU now.” I’ve seen it in many places, but one example is from Michael Savage, promoted by the Worldnutdaily.
“Even the ACLU is shocked” by the Obama administration’s secret grab of phone records of millions of Americans, says talk-radio host Michael Savage.
He noted on his nationally syndicated show Friday night that while Obama has characterized the government’s access to the data as a “modest encroachment” on privacy, an ACLU senior policy analyst called it a “gross privacy invasion.”…
Savage cited an op-ed for Reuters by the ACLU’s Ben Wizner that pointed out the disturbing privacy implications of the Obama administration’s surveillance program.
Other right wing sites have joined the chorus, with the Free Republic folks saying, “Even the ACLU is pretending to be shocked.” Actually, the ACLU isn’t shocked at all. The ACLU has been exposing Obama’s abuses of power from the moment he took office and has never let up. They’ve filed numerous lawsuits over illegal surveillance. This is only surprising to low-information ideologues who presume that everyone thinks like they do — always partisan, no matter the situation — rather than being principled. They’re only surprised by this because it conflicts with the ACLU in their head, not the one that actually exists.
