I remember Ben Kinchlow as the co-host of the 700 Club in the early 80s, when I watched the show almost daily (I was then a very devout Christian). But now he’s a columnist who spouts all manner of ignorant nonsense at the Worldnutdaily every week. In his latest column, he compares the complaints against King George III in the Declaration of Independence to Obama’s actions.
Another of the least read, least recognized documents in American public life today (probably second only to the Bible) contains these words:
“He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
“He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.
“He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
“He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation.
For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent.”…
It is interesting to note that as we approach the millennium, we find ourselves in almost the exact condition that precipitated a revolution. Re-read the examples leading to their frustration and compare them with our status as a “free” people today.
Please explain how Obama has “erected a multitude of New Offices.” Again, not only has he not done so, he can’t do so (other than advisory positions within the White House, an authority exercised by every president.
Please provide examples of how Obama has attempted to “render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.” I thought the complaint against him was that he was running roughshod over the military, forcing them to accept gay soldiers in some grand social experiment. Now suddenly he’s allowing the military to overrule civilian power?
How, precisely, has he subjugated the country “to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws.” What jurisdiction? Under the control of what entity?
Lastly, exactly what taxes has he imposed on us without our consent? The president cannot raise taxes, only Congress can. Some taxes have been raised on the wealthy, but only through legislation voted on by our representatives. Where does the “without our consent” part come in?
What’s that? You have no substantive answers to those questions? How terribly surprising. There are a great many things to legitimately criticize Obama for, but none of the things Kinchlow fantasizes about.
